The story of Hetian Jade is a legend that has run through China for thousands of years. Not only for its warm and delicate texture, but also for the profound cultural and historical significance it carries, it has become a bright pearl of Chinese civilization.

The Road of Jade Picking
The beginning of the story can be traced back to ancient times, when Hotan Jade was hidden in the depths of the Kunlun Mountains in the Hotan region of Xinjiang. According to the “Classic of Mountains and Seas” and other ancient texts, Hotan Jade was often collected in the summer of each year, when the ice melted and the beautiful jade in the Jade River came down with the water. Ancient people would ride on rafts and go downstream to look for those jade pieces scattered on the riverbanks. This process was full of hardships and dangers, but the preciousness and charm of Hetian jade made countless jade pickers go after them, leaving behind the ancient motto of “Jade is not cut, it does not become a tool; people do not learn, they do not know”.

Royal Love
During the Han Dynasty, the preciousness of Hetian Jade was recognized by the royal family and it became a treasure in the court. During the period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, Hetian Jade began to be imported into the Central Plains in large quantities, and became the exclusive product of the royal family and nobles. According to the Book of Han, Hetian jade was regarded as “the most important weapon of the state”, and was not only used to make sacrificial items such as jade biscuits and jade cong, but also carved into royal symbols such as jade seals and jade juan, which demonstrated the emperor’s dignity and majesty.

Cultural Symbol
In Chinese culture,Hetian Jade is not only a material asset, but also a spiritual symbol. In the Book of Rites, it is said, “A gentleman is more virtuous than jade.” The warmth and toughness of Hetian jade coincides with the character of a gentleman, and it is endowed with the five virtues of “benevolence, righteousness, wisdom, courage and purity”. In the writings of the literati, Hetian jade has become a symbol of noble character and purity of heart, such as Su Shi’s “Song of Songs – Mid-Autumn Festival”, in which the phrase “I wish for a long life, a thousand miles to be together with Cindy”, although not directly mentioning Hetian jade, but its meaning and the warmth of Hetian jade, the beauty of the long-lasting, coincide with the beauty of the Hetian jade.
