Yellow amber, a beautiful and poignant story in Greek mythology, is closely linked to the tragedy of Phaethon, the granddaughter of Helios, the sun god.
### The Story of Phaethon and Yellow Amber
1. **The Challenge of Phaethon**: Phaethon was the son of Helios, the sun god, and he longed to prove his lineage. At his mother’s urging, he asked his father to drive a sun carriage for a day. Helios could not refuse, but warned him that the carriage would be difficult to drive. Unfortunately, Phaethon fails to control the celestial horse and the carriage comes too close to the ground and the world goes up in flames.
2. **Zeus’ Intervention**: In order to avert an even greater catastrophe, Zeus struck Phaethon with lightning, and he fell from the sky into the Eridanos River (Eridanos).
3. **The Teardrops of Yellow Amber**: Unable to bear the death of their brother, Phaethon’s sisters, also known as Heliades, were overwhelmed with grief and wept daily. Their tears fell to the ground and turned into precious yellow amber. In other versions of the legend, the Heliades sisters were transformed by their grief into aspens and their tears into yellow amber.
4. **The Amber Road**: According to this legend, yellow amber is particularly abundant in the Baltic Sea region, as it is believed that it was over these waters that Fëtun’s carriage fell and that the tears of the Heliades sisters landed in this region.
The story not only tells of the tragedy of Phaethon, but also explains the origins of yellow amber, linking it closely to grief, loss and the wonders of nature. In ancient Greece, yellow amber was imbued with mystical powers and was believed to bring protection and healing.
Europe’s “Amber Road”
Since ancient times, Europe has had a famous “Amber Route”, which originated along the Baltic Sea coast and extended through Central Europe to the Mediterranean. This route was not only a trade route, but also a bridge for the exchange of cultures and beliefs. Yellow amber is an important commodity along this route, and carries a wealth of historical and cultural significance.
Amber symbolism
In Greek mythology, yellow amber symbolizes not only sorrow and loss, but also eternal love and sacrifice. It was seen as a medium of connection between nature and the gods and was one of the treasured gems of ancient civilizations.
