According to legend, the beautiful siren Amethyst was a devotee of Athena, the goddess of hunters. One day, while travelling through the forest, Amethyst encountered Dionysus, the powerful god of wine. Attracted by Amethyst’s grace and purity, Dionysus pursued her fervently.

In defence of her virtue, Amethyst begged the goddess Athena to protect her. In response, the goddess transformed the siren into a glowing purple crystal to save her from Dionysus. The heartbroken Dionysus poured wine from his goblet over the crystal, forever tinting it with a deep purple colour and associating it with the divine.
