Thalassa, the goddess of the sea, provided her with the shell to cover her body in order to protect her purity and beauty. Thus, the shell became one of Aphrodite’s symbols, closely linked to her image and mythology. In works of art, Aphrodite is often depicted as being born from a shell or standing on a shell, an image made famous especially in the Renaissance painting The Birth of Venus.
